At Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento, the Yankees defeated the A's 13-8 on Sunday and finished the road series with a series win.
After a quiet start with two scoreless innings and a first-inning error that helped the A's score three runs, the Yankees' offense caught fire at the top of the third. They scored thirteen runs in that single inning to build the lead 13-3.
“Remarkable,” Boone said after the game. “Glad we were able to make it stand up. Obviously, a lot of really good things offensively in that inning — different walks, different two-out hits, stolen bases. I don’t think it was the prettiest game on either side necessarily, but we were able to make a really outstanding inning stand up.”
That third inning lasted 43 minutes. The Yankees sent 18 batters to the plate, collected 11 hits, drew four walks, and stole four bases. The first 12 Yankees reached base, and eight starters reached safely in the inning.
The rally began with a single from Anthony Volpe, and the lineup continued to advance. Ben Rice did the most damage, with a two-run double and a two-run triple in his two at-bats.
Paul Goldschmidt, Aaron Judge, Cody Bellinger, Austin Wells, José Caballero, Max Schuemann, and Trent Grisham all helped stretch the inning out with hits, walks, and smart baserunning.
The strangest part was that all of New York’s offense came in that one inning. The Yankees did not score again for the rest of the night.
“Today was just a strange day all around, so add that one to the list,” said Boone.
But A's make some more effort to come back in the game. Brent Rooker and Jonah Heim both hit home runs. And the A’s scored four runs in the seventh and one more in the eighth.
“We needed all 13 of those runs, because the A’s kept swinging and kind of came back there,” Judge said.
Will Warren Stayed Ready While Inning Kept Going
The 43-minute-long 3rd inning also tested Yankees starter Will Warren. Volpe said Warren was “maybe freaking out” while waiting in the dugout.
So Warren headed to the bullpen. He threw a few warm-up pitches to stay loose. He came back in control and finished his six innings of pitching without allowing an earned run.
Boone was impressed at how Warren handled the situation.
“I thought Will did a good job of settling in, dealing with that — obviously, the long third inning,” Boone said. “You know, when do you see a starting pitcher go down to the bullpen? I mean, it got that long. So good job by him of locking in and giving us six strong innings there.”
"You know, had a few grays here today, but, obviously, a great way to finish, a really good road trip," Boone added.
