The Los Angeles Dodgers acquired two-time AL Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal from the Detroit Tigers on Saturday ahead of the trade deadline.

In exchange, Detroit received a three-player prospect package: outfielder Zyhir Hope, right-hander River Ryan and right-hander Brady Smith.

It's the biggest domino of this year's deadline by a wide margin, and a deal of this size never comes without questions.

Still, the writing had been on the wall for months.

Skubal was currently on a 1-year, $32 million contract for the 2026 season, which he won through an arbitration hearing in February 2026. And he's set to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season. So this was always where it was already headed.

Now, start with the obvious. The Dodgers are already the two-time defending World Series champions, and set to reach the three-peat for the first time since the Yankees did in 1998-2000.

They are already the division leader, so this trade is never really for the regular season. Still, Skubal was needed. Shohei Ohtani hasn't pitched in weeks while working through a knee injury. And both Blake Snell and Tyler Glasnow have spent chunks of the season on the injured list.

Now, adding Skubal to a group that already includes 2025 World Series MVP Yoshinobu Yamamoto and All-Star Justin Wrobleski means the Dodgers no longer have to rush anyone back before they're ready.

Equally important, the Dodgers never had to dip into the very top of their farm system. They have suitable replacements for Hope within their organization, such as Josue De Paula and Mike Sirota. They are posting higher OPS in a similarly batting-friendly environment.

Additionally, they simply had no room for River Ryan in their historically stacked rotation. Thus, it was a win-win deal for the Dodgers, even with the loss of three prospects, despite only having Skubal’s services for 2½ months.

They kept their biggest organizational prizes while still landing the best player on the market.

Detroit's Side of the Ledger

For Detroit, trading away the best pitcher your organization has developed in years is never easy. Still, Detroit's front office clearly looked beyond 2026.

The centerpiece of the return is 21-year-old outfielder Zyhir Hope. Hope was hitting .293/.369/.530 with 23 home runs in Double-A with impressive speed and athleticism.

Many believe he could become an everyday corner outfielder as early as next season if his development continues.

River Ryan is the more complicated piece. A converted position player who only started pitching full-time after the Dodgers acquired him from San Diego in a trade, he throws in the upper 90s with a plus slider.

Injuries have slowed his career, including Tommy John surgery that wiped out 2025 and a recent hamstring strain. But when healthy, many scouts still see mid-rotation potential because of his stuff and strike-throwing ability.

Brady Smith, 21, is still developing after returning from Tommy John surgery. He throws a mid-90s fastball and one of the better changeups in the Dodgers' system.

Does that fully replace Tarik Skubal? Of course not. But for a pitcher who can leave in free agency after the season, Detroit secured three legitimate long-term assets instead of risking losing him for nothing.

It's also worth noting that Detroit isn't necessarily done. Right-hander Casey Mize has drawn interest from the Braves, Padres, Cubs, and Brewers.

He was scratched from a recent start amid trade speculation. Now, if Detroit moves him too before Monday, this becomes a full reset built around a young rotation core of Troy Melton, Jackson Jobe and Keider Montero.
