Carlos Lagrange’s Ongoing Concern — What He Needs to Improve

New York Yankees Carlos Lagrange has been the talk of the town, and it’s easy to see why. The 6-foot-7 right-hander has been flaunting triple-digit fastballs.
Through his first four minor-league starts, Lagrange has gone 0-2 with a 4.30 ERA. While he is still fanning hitters at an elite rate(18 strikeouts over 14.2 innings), his command and consistency remain an issue.
As Matthew Schmidt for The Round Table Sports highlighted, "The Dominican native has fantastic stuff. No one is ever going to doubt that. But if he can't consistently throw strikes, he is never going to be able to develop into the frontline pitcher many are expecting."
Lagrange has averaged 5.3 free passes per nine innings for his career. Since entering the system in 2022, Carlos Lagrange has posted a 4.7 BB/9 even in his best statistical season in 2025.
However, his numbers have improved. Lagrange posted a 0.66 ERA and struck out 13 batters over 13.2 innings during spring training.
Carlos Lagrange also spoke about the things he has been working on. “Attacking the zone, being able to execute with two strikes more consistently, staying calm on the mound regardless of the situation,” he said in March.
The "It" factor: A mind that never quits
YES Network’s Jack Curry suggested Lagrange possesses a rare 'k***** mindset'. Last June, while pitching for Double-A Somerset, Lagrange faced 11 stolen bases in just four innings.
The next day, Lagrange told his coaches, "That’s never happening again". He immediately reduced his delivery time from 1.8 to 1.2 seconds.
Lagrange's speed also keeps improving. In his most recent win against the Rochester RedWings, the 22-year-old hit 102+ mph nine times.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone said, "He’s definitely got everyone’s attention. I love where he’s at. I would not be surprised if he is impacting us early, middle, and the later part of the season."
Pitching coach Matt Blake has also hinted that a 2026 bullpen role remains a possibility if needed in any part of the season.
