Decade of the Pinstripes: Lessons from the Bronx’s Highs and Lows

In the Bronx, time doesn’t move in years; it moves with expectations. The last decade has been difficult for the New York Yankees, marked by close losses, near-win moments, and a prolonged rebuilding phase.
From 2015 to 2025, the team has rarely disappeared from the spotlight, consistently reaching the playoffs year after year.
Seasons with 90+ wins have become the norm since 2015: 91 (2017), 100 (2018), 103 (2019), 92 (2021), 99 (2022), 94 (2024), and 94 (2025). That’s seven 90+ win seasons in the last decade. However, there’s a fine line of difference between having a dominant season and clinching the championship.

By 2017, a young team led by Aaron Judge took the helm of the division, storming through the ALCS, raising optimism from the fans for a trophy. However, the dream remained a dream as they lost the game to the Astros by 2-4.
The very next year, Joe Girardi left the Yankees, and Aaron Boone was in the manager's seat. By then, the team was already strong enough with proper batting backups and bullpen depth. However, they were still far from the trophy as time and again, other teams succeeded in stopping them when it mattered the most.
Here’s one unknown fact about the team: Despite a 90+ win average seven times in a decade, the Yankees have hovered around a .580 win percentage, which is a high floor guaranteeing a playoff position, but the rate is not strong enough to get them across the crucial October stretch.
What does this mean? Well, the team is built for a proper stretch, but when pressure strikes, they crumble. In short, they are not built for chaos.
The New York Yankees fell when it mattered the most
And the October stretch demands nothing but chaos
Take the 2025 season as a case study, the Yankees ended their stretch with a 94-68 record with elite attendance, and another playoff berth. On paper, the team looked well settled and on the path to clinch another trophy since 2019. However, a midseason collapse cost them everything. They lost the division and were forced to take the wildcard path. Interestingly, this “strong starts, summer stumbles” has defined the Boone era in the Yankees; even in 2026, the team is facing the same problem.
Another overlooked delta about the team is that they have made it to the playoffs a staggering eight times in the last ten years. That’s a golden decade for many franchises, but not for the Yankees, who strive for nothing but the trophy.
With 27 championships and a .570 all-time win rate, anything other than a title feels like a bug for the team. In the 2006-2015 era, the team managed a rather strong portfolio with constant playoff appearances and a World Series title in 2009.
However, the 1996–2005 era was something else for the Yankees. They had multiple 100+ win seasons and won four World Series titles (1996, 1998, 1999, 2000). Known as the dynasty era, this was the best decade for the Yankees.
Compared to the past two decades, the Yankees' performance has been disappointing since they have not won a single World Series this decade. Given that, what are your thoughts on the team?
