DENVER - Ethan Salas homered twice in a game for the first time and was the youngest player with a multi-homer effort in the majors, helping the San Diego Padres beat the Colorado Rockies 9-3 on Wednesday night.

Salas, leading off the second inning, hit a first-pitch shot off reliever Mason Adams (0-1) 426 feet over the wall in center and broke the record held by 19-year-old Ivn Rodrguez, who homered for Arizona in 1991.

Salas also hit a two-run drive that finished the Padres' four-run fifth and expanded the lead to 8-1. At 20 years, 107 days old, he set the mark for youngest with multiple homers on record with only Butch Wynegar having done it younger for the Twins at 20 years, 192 days on Sept. 22, 1976. Salas is in his first season in the majors after signing with San Diego out of Mexico as a 16-year-old three years ago.

San Diego (83-69), which has won nine of its last 10, entered the night two games ahead of Arizona for the NL's last postseason spot. The Padres also stopped Los Angeles from clinching the NL West. Robbie Ray (13-8) struck out six and allowed three hits and three runs in six innings.

Samad Taylor and Ty France drove in two apiece for the Padres, who had three hits by Jackson Merrill. Jake Cronenworth hit an RBI single in the first and Nelson Velzquez had an RBI groundout.

France's sacrifice fly scored Tatis, who doubled with one out. Velzquez hit a grounder to bring home Carlos Correa in the second.

Kyle Karros hit a two-run homer for the Rockies in the sixth. Adael Amador had an RBI grounder in the first. Taylor doubled and scored on Dustin Harris triple in the fourth, then singled in a run in the fifth.
