In 2004, Aaron Boone faced a notorious left ACL injury, one that led to one of the Yankees' biggest trades in history. But the injury was only the catalyst. His decision to confess the truth behind it cost him his $5.75 million contract.
A month into his 2004 deal, Yankees infielder Aaron Boone tore his left ACL during a pickup basketball game, a clear breach of his agreement that made his spot vulnerable.
MLB contracts contain a 'hazardous risk' clause, prohibiting players from participating in risky sports. Most players would have spun a cover story. But Booner told the truth.
“My mama taught me better than that," he said.

Boone confessed the truth to the Yankees, as reported by NJ.com. Yankees GM Brian Cashman was notified about the freak injury and chose to restructure the roster.
Breaking the "hazardous activities" clause can lead to serious consequences, including losing the contract and guaranteed salary.
Boone was entitled to 30 days' termination pay. But his off-field basketball game cost him $4.8 million from his $5.75 million deal.
The third baseman's spot was immediately vacant. It led Cashman to make one of the biggest trades in his tenure with the team. Alfonso Soriano and a minor-leaguer, Joaquín Arias, were traded to the Texas Rangers to acquire the AL MVP Alex Rodriguez.
Texas covered $67 million of the $179 million left on Rodriguez's contract, setting an MLB record for the largest cash payment ever made by a team in a trade.
The trade marked the beginning of the Alex Rodriguez era in New York,. It helped the Yankees win the 2009 World Series and made it one of the most important deals in franchise history.
The injury forced Boone to miss the entire season, and his honesty about the incident brought an end to his Yankees career, despite his iconic Game 7 walk-off home run.. Yet, Boone wouldn't change a thing.
Aaron Boone had no regrets over his confession
In 2005, he played for the Cleveland Indians, going on to compete in 5 seasons with four clubs. Sixteen years later, he opened up on the drama in the Big Time Baseball podcast on Radio.com.
"I got up and hopped off the court and cried as I drove home," he revealed. The moment crystallized his decision to confess to the Yankees.
"I kind of believe everything happens for a reason. It's all part of your journey," added Boone, who has been serving as the Yankees manager since 2018. "It led me to other places, and other teams, and other great experiences that have all gone into shaping who I am."
Aaron Boone is proof that while honesty might come with a price, it always pays off in the long run. Was telling the truth the correct decision? Drop your thoughts.
