How Week 4 Shaped the Yankees’ Season Outlook

Apr 27, 2026, 6:51 PM CUT

We're just about a month into the 2026 MLB season. But it's enough to see the depth of the lineup the Yankees have and where their season is headed.

While so many playoff hopefuls like the Mets, Phillies, and Red Sox are struggling to stay afloat, it is good for the Yankees that they are one of the best, if not the best, teams in the American League.

The foundation of this is its pitching depth. They currently lead the league with a 3.11 team ERA. All while they don't have Carlos Rodon and Gerrit Cole, yet. They are currently on rehab assignments in the minors and are expected to return by early June.

In their absence, Max Fried (2.40 ERA and a 0.81 WHIP), Cam Schlittler (1.77 ERA and 41 strikeouts), Will Warren, and Ryan Weathers were steadying the ship.

Offense has been their power so far. Ben Rice has turned into a legitimate AL MVP candidate. He is currently slashing .326/.450/.747 with 9 home runs and 21 RBIs.

Rice leads the team in nearly every major offensive category and is second in the majors in OPS (1.183). Captain Aaron Judge hit his 10th home run on his 34th birthday. Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Jose Caballero have started to get hot.

And with all of them, the Yankees are currently leading the AL East with an 18-10 record.

But despite the success, there are cracks in the armor

The bullpen is the issue. David Bednar has 7 saves but has struggled with consistency. Angel Chivilli was recently placed on the 15-day IL after a period of struggle. Relievers like Jake Bird have faced "tough outings," allowing multiple runs in short appearances.

Another frustration for manager Aaron Boone is the team's failure to use the ABS in their favor. The Yankees have lost 13 of their last 16 challenges. Jazz Chisholm Jr. has particularly struggled in this department.

Apart from them, players like Austin Wells (.188 AVG), veteran Paul Goldschmidt (.609 OPS), and Ryan McMahon are still searching for offense. But the organiZation backed them and believes they will settle in as the season rolls on.

Last but not least, the Yankees' depth is their greatest strength. And with Jasson Dominguez recently being recalled after hitting .326 in Triple-A, the team is only getting deeper from here.
