Max Fried Sidelined — Sad to Be Out, Encouraged There’s No Lasting Injury

Max Fried is out. On Friday, the New York Yankees pitcher was placed on the 15-day injured list with a left elbow bone bruise after MRI and CT scans showed the problem.

Though Fried is disappointed to miss time, he is relieved that it isn't a serious injury, with the medical team saying that the important elbow ligament looks good.

"I’m definitely bummed that I'm going to have to be missing some time, but overall happy that it doesn't look like it's gonna be anything serious — no surgery required or anything like that," Fried said regarding the diagnosis. "So never want to go on the IL and miss games, but also understand that the long-term outlook still looks good."

Max Fried disappeared in the tunnel after three innings of work(his shortest start of the season)on Wednesday's start against the Baltimore Orioles. He allowed three runs on five hits and issued one walk while striking out two.

Fried threw 61 pitches before the training staff and Aaron Boone decided his posterior soreness was too significant to continue. He was checked by Yankees doctor Dr. Christopher Ahmad in New York, and the imaging was also sent to Dr. Neal ElAttrache from LA for a second look.

Fried is 4-3 with a 3.21 ERA overall, after opening the year with a 4-1 record and a 2.09 ERA through March and April. Before the injury, he had been a big reason the Yankees were rolling.

Fried, who underwent Tommy John surgery in 2014, was informed that his ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) "looks good." And the team said he will be shut down from throwing for at least a few weeks before repeat imaging decides the next step.

How will the Yankees adjust to Max Fried’s Injury?

Gerrit Cole is still on his rehab path from Tommy John surgery in March, and the club expects him back in early June. However, the Yankees aren't rushing with his recovery. Cole is scheduled to make his sixth Minor League rehab start on Saturday for Double-A Somerset.

That said, New York may lean on the same kind of four-man rotation it used earlier this season, when early off-days made that plan possible. Boone already has Cam Schlittler, Will Warren, Ryan Weathers, and Carlos Rodon for that setup.

If the Yankees want a fifth starter instead, Elmer Rodríguez is the best possible option. Rodríguez already made two big league starts this year.

And if they choose to keep up with the Bullpen games, Paul Blackburn and Ryan Yarbrough are already on the staff as multi-inning options. It gives Boone some room to mix and match until Fried heals and Cole is ready.
