In one of the cleanest two-hour-and-thirty-one-minute road wins, the New York Yankees overcame the Detroit Tigers and clinched the series 4-2, thanks to the duo of Paul Goldschmidt and Jasson Dominguez.
While the Tigers held their own through the first four innings with Tarik Skubal at the helm, the Yankees did something no other team had done against the back-to-back AL Cy Young winner since 2021, hitting three home runs.
Goldschmidt started the honors with a 3-1 count in the first inning, hitting Skubal's four-seamer 372 feet into the left-field seats. He did it again two innings later, low curve, 427 feet to left center, 104.9 mph.
The Yankees took control in the sixth inning after Skubal struck out seven of the last nine Yankees. Ben Rice led off with a single, followed by Dominguez's go-ahead two-run shot to break a 2-2 tie.
“Skubal is one of the best,” Domínguez said. “He’s definitely a tough matchup. But I was just trying to take a good at-bat. Trying to fight him, trying to battle. That was all that was in my mind.”
If the rumors of Skubal's potential trade are true, the Yankees will definitely show interest in his services, among the many others.
However, if Skubal does end up as their opposition once again, the Yankees know they have the secret weapon in Goldschmidt waiting to neutralize him.
This was the 28th multi-homer game of Goldschmidt's career and 14th for the season, as he finished 2-for-4, 2 HR, 2 RBI, 2 runs. The 38-year-old is now the eighth-oldest player to go deep twice batting leadoff in a single game since 1900.
While all the headlines will naturally go to Goldschmidt and Dominguez, Ryan Weathers was a silent hero for the Yankees at Comerica Park.
Ryan Weathers Holds the Wheel
In six innings, Weathers finished with 6 hits, 2 runs (1 earned), 2 walks, 6 strikeouts, 97 pitches. While nothing exemplary, it did not need to be in the end.
Moreover, he never let the Tigers come close to building a rally that could have potentially changed the nature of an inning. The Tigers touched him up for hits in bunches and still only scored twice.
This was a well-run road win for the Yankees with three home runs in six hits against the best pitcher in the American League last year.
Although it must be said that the game could have looked quite different if Goldschmidt had been unable to rise to the occasion.
With the Yankees at the top of the East, this victory will give them further momentum before flying to Boston to face the Red Sox, who are 3-7 in their last 10 games.
So, do you think Paul Goldschmidt is Tarik Skubal's only kryptonite? Let us know in the comments.
