Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Jesús Sánchez was injured in a bizarre fashion during a 9-5 Toronto Blue Jays loss at Camden Yards on Sunday, May 31. In his postgame press conference, Blue Jays manager John Schneider broke his silence on field safety concerns.

Although the Toronto outfielder avoided a serious injury after being hit by a ball from the stands, the incident still resulted in a right wrist contusion and an early exit. Schneider explained the chain of events and the miscommunication behind the incident.

“He was kind of talking with a 12-year-old kid, kind of going back and forth. I think in a playful manner, like almost like, 'hey, let's play catch,'" he addressed the miscommunication that led to the incident. "And I think that the kid took it literally. And, it hit Sanchez with the ball. So, not ideal. The ball shouldn't be coming into the field of play, anyway.”

The Blue Jays were already trailing 6-0 at the bottom of the sixth. Sánchez was in right field. During a mound visit, he briefly looked toward the fans in the bleachers. A young fan thought he was being asked to throw the ball back, so he threw a ball onto the field.

By the time the ball arrived, Sánchez had turned away. It struck him on the wrist and forearm, and he was then taken out of the game. The head coach stressed how the ball never should have been on the field, irrespective of the situation.

After the incident, Blue Jays Manager, training staff, and a police officer rushed out to check on Sánchez.

Immediately after the ball struck Sánchez, ballpark security identified the young fan and his adult guardian. They ejected them both from the field before the game concluded.

Incidents involving fans tossing baseballs onto the field are nothing new. During a 2024 matchup between the San Francisco Giants and Colorado Rockies, a fan was ejected after grabbing a foul ball from Brendan Rodgers and throwing it back into play.

Meanwhile, fans are now concerned about Sánchez after the incident.

What's the Update on Jesús Sánchez Now?

Sánchez underwent immediate evaluation at the stadium. Fortunately for the Blue Jays, the imaging returned negative for any fractures or structural damage on X-rays. He was officially diagnosed with a right wrist contusion.

Sánchez was seen wearing a bandage after the game.

“It was a misunderstanding. I wasn’t trying to play catch right there,” Sánchez said after the game. “I just looked at them and they thought maybe I wanted them to throw the ball back to me. But like I said, it was a misunderstanding completely and it is what it is.”

Sánchez was replaced by Yohendrick Piñango in the game. Piñango went on to hit a late three-run home run in the 9-5 loss.

Before his exit, Sánchez was 1-for-2 with a single at the plate. He was batting .287 with six home runs, 11 doubles, and 28 RBIs in 57 games before the injury.
