Should the Mets Consider Alternatives to Carlos Mendoza After Cora’s Firing?

Apr 27, 2026, 6:05 PM CUT

With 19 defeats and just 9 victories, the New York Mets are among the worst teams in MLB so far this season. And as the noise around accountability grows, especially in the wake of Alex Cora’s fiasco, the question arises: should the Mets take a different route when it comes to their manager?

The Boston Red Sox have won 11 games and lost 17 so far this season, and although they’ve impressively won their last two games, management has dismissed not only Alex Cora but the entire coaching staff. Yes, they are not in a good position, but it is far better than what the Mets are facing right now.

Out of the last 17 matches, the team has lost 15. In addition to that, the offense is so poor that they have scored only 92 runs in total this season, which is the lowest in the MLB so far. Overall, they have 20 home runs, second last in the league.

They have already been shut out five times this season, and have scored fewer than two runs in their last 10 outings. Against the Colorado Rockies, the team managed only four runs in total throughout the series. “It’s hard to explain when you have that many guys that are going through it at the same time,” Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said.

He further added, “It’s just not a good showing. Not good at-bats up and down. Get a guy here and there, but overall, not hitting the ball hard consistently. It’s hard. It’s hard to explain because you get three or four guys that go through, but you've got four or five guys that can carry. But right now, it’s hard to describe.”

Despite the problems in the team's offense, Mendoza still has faith in the team, and believes it can be fixed, no matter how tough the situation is. How much time does he get for it?

Well, Mendoza is in his final guaranteed year of the initial three-year contract. The Mets do hold a 2027 option for a manager; however, looking at the sad state of the team, if they fall further, we might witness another manager restructure in the MLB this season.

Carlos Mendoza stares down the storm

The chattering is there after the Alex Cora fiasco, but what does the skipper think about it? When asked whether his journey with the team would continue after this season, Mendoza refused to comment on that, saying, “The only thing I'm worried about here is I've got to get the guys going.”

He further added, “I get it. I get it. It s****, and I know the questions will continue to come up, but my job is to find a way to get the guys out of the funk. That's the bottom line.”

With that said, what do you think will happen with Carlos Mendoza? Will the Mets front office take him down?
