Spencer Jones’ first series in the Majors never really went as planned against the Milwaukee Brewers; however, the 24-year-old slugger certainly proved his worth in the third game.
After a difficult start to the series, Jones finally found his moment in the third game, jumping on Logan Henderson’s first pitch of the second innings when he fired up a 106.4 mph RBI single to center field that scored José Caballero from second.
The Yankees were up 2-0 after his hammering; however, they lost the game 4-3. When asked how he felt after finally driving in some runs for the team in the Majors.
“It was super exciting. I'm glad that my family was here to share that with me, and teammates were rooting me on. A lot of congratulations. You know, I was excited to get a run across too for the guys, and it was a pretty special moment,” Jones said.
Jones delivered the milestone on Mother’s Day, with his family, especially his mother, in the stands, cheering for him beside the Yankees dugout.
The Yankees’ No.4 prospect went 1-for-4 with a strikeout, finishing the series 1-for 9 against the Brewers. The Milwaukee pitching unit gave the Yankees a beating throughout the week.
Still, the slugger sounded confident about the adjustments ahead. “Trial by fire is the best way to do it,” Jones said.
“Getting exposed to a lot of really good arms is the best way to get your feet wet -- as the days have gone I’ve settled in more, I’m starting to feel comfortable and do what I do, and moving forward I’ll be in a good spot.”
Well, the question is, has he done enough to keep his place in the team? As per Aaron Boone, it’s a yes.
Aaron Boone on Spencer Jones’ performance so far
“He had a lot of good at-bats,” the skipper said. “Was able to get the first one today, which everyone was excited about, got some decent swings off, was recognizing the zone well, wasn’t chasing, but also ran into some tough matchups.”
The Milwaukee pitching lineup was certainly brutal for the Yankees, and now that they’ve had a taste of the season’s intensity, they’ll have to level up to face constant 100 mph fastballs moving forward.
With that said, even Aaron Judge took notice of Spencer Jones’ calm presence during the series. “Ecstatic,” said Aaron Judge, who praised how “composed” Jones looked throughout the weekend. “Everybody was kind of waiting for it. Just happy his family could be here for him.”
While Jones struggled overall in his debut series, his composure and team support suggest a bright future ahead.
