Yankees’ defensive errors spark fan debate over position shuffles

On Sunday, June 21, the Cincinnati Reds earned a 4-1 victory over the New York Yankees. It was their second series win in a row. However, while Yankees fans are upset with the loss, they were more disappointed about the defensive errors.

Coming into Saturday, the Yankees were 12–2 in the right-hander’s 14 appearances, the highest winning rate (.857) for any team in a pitcher’s games (min. 10 starts). That trend, however, didn’t hold in their 10-2 defeat to the Reds at Yankee Stadium.

After a week marked by baserunning errors, José Caballero again ran into trouble. On Sunday, he walked, stole second, and was then picked off to end the second inning.

The Reds added an insurance run in the eighth inning against Camilo Doval, starting with a hustle double by Spencer Steer.

Steer reached on a slow roller that slipped under second baseman Jazz Chisholm’s glove. As he advanced to second, Caballero, who had been moved from left field to center field an inning earlier, came up throwing.

However, Caballero’s throw sailed over second base and all the way to the backstop, allowing Steer to move up to third.

Steer came around to score on a ground-rule double from Marte after Jasson Domínguez, playing right field for just the seventh time in his career with Aaron Judge sidelined, couldn’t make the play in front of the fence.

Fans are already showing their frustration in the clip shared by Talkin’ Yanks.

Reactions pour in from the fans after the New York Yankees’ loss against the Cincinnati Reds

A fan is upset with Caballero’s position change by Yankees manager Aaron Boone.

“Makes a lot of sense that the best defensive short stop in baseball is playing center field,” read the comment.

Another fan held Doval accountable. “Bad things always happen when Doval is in the game,” he wrote. Through early June, he has posted a 5.47 ERA over 29 outings and 24.2 innings. He started as the team’s primary setup pitcher but has since been used in a mix of lower, medium, and high-leverage situations.

To a fan, Volpe should have been more alert and helped on the play, but he didn’t react fast enough. “What is Volpe doing!!! Just standing around doing nothing! He could’ve gotten that ball after it snuck past Jazz!!!!!” read the comment.

These mistakes are the reasons why the team underperforms expectations, according to a fan. “You ask why they always have 4-5 less wins than expected. Theres too many games like today," he wrote.

The Yankees wrapped up their homestand with a 3–3 record before heading to Detroit.
