Yankees' Performance Keeps Them Firmly in AL East Contention

Apr 19, 2026, 2:30 PM CUT

The New York Yankees are battling to maintain their edge in a hyper-competitive AL East. What started as an 8-2 run has become a 12-9 record with the Yanks losing six of their last ten outings. However, a two-game win streak has renewed hope.

After getting swept 3-0 by the Rays and tying 2-2 against the Angels, the Yankees have taken a commanding 2-0 lead against the Royals in their ongoing series.

With key additions like Cody Bellinger, bringing back Trent Grisham, and David Bednar and Cam Schlittler handling defense, the Bronx Bombers aim to avoid the late-season slump that haunted their previous campaign.

Last season, the Yankees finished 94–68, but suffered an ALDS exit against Toronto. Yankees beat reporter Bryan Hoch believes they're in a better position.

“Offense shouldn’t be an issue. On the pitching side, they didn’t get a single inning from Gerrit Cole last year," wrote Hoch.

"They are expecting a full season of Cam Schlittler, and at some point, I’d expect Elmer Rodriguez (MLB Pipeline's No. 82 overall prospect) and Carlos Lagrange (No. 79 overall prospect) to help at the big league level," he added.

Meanwhile, Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodón are expected to rejoin the team soon as they continue their rehab assignments in the minor leagues.

They are currently second to the Rays in the division, but have the same wins. If they sweep the Kansas City Royals, the Yankees can regain the lead even if it's momentary.

New York is averaging .218 with .319 OBS, .403 SLG, and .721 OPS this season. However, the problem is that the team has relied heavily on big hits like home runs and struggled with singles and RBIs.

The New York Yankees can't afford another skid as the race is open

The Toronto Blue Jays are rebuilding their team after losing the title last year. They have added ace Dylan Cease to the team and armed the bullpen powerhouses like Tyler Rogers to the team.

They also have a new power hitter, Kazuma Okamoto. However, despite that, they are currently last in the AL East standings with a record of 7-13.

The Red Sox finished third in the AL East last year and are betting big on pitching this season. They acquired Ranger Suárez on a five-year deal by trading Sonny Gray, and he will join Garrett Crochet to anchor the rotation.

The Rays finished fourth last season but are right there with the Yankees for now. The team has reshaped its roster, moving out key names like Shane Baz and the Lowe brothers. In return, they have added versatile players like Gavin Lux, Cedric Mullins, Jake Fraley, and Steven Matz.

So while they remain in contention as the season rolls on, the Yankees can't afford another six-game losing streak if they plan to keep it that way.
