Bad news continues to batter the Yankees. As Trent Grisham's scans result confirm he'll be out for a few weeks, top prospect George Lombard Jr.'s latest update isn't good news either.
On Tuesday, the Yankees endured another scare as Lombard Jr. had to exit his Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre game after suffering a hand injury.
The incident took place in the bottom of the fourth innings when the 21-year-old tried to catch a throw from Austin Wells, who is in his rehab assignment, on a stolen base attempt at second base.
The incident took place in the bottom of the fourth innings when Lombard attempted to catch a one-off from catcher Austin Wells on a stolen base attempt at second base.
During the play at the plate, runner Bo Naylor made contact with Lombard Jr.'s left hand as he reached to catch the ball.
Following the impact, Lombard made his way to the infield grass in pain. Although the shortstop returned to the field to complete the inning, he appeared to be in pain throughout the game.
Lombard Jr. has now joined a list of crucial players like Aaron Judge, Austin Wells, Trent Grisham, Max Fried, and Giancarlo Stanton who are on the bench. The RailRaiders have not provided an update about the injuries.
The 21-year-old finished the game averaging .258 with an .833 OPS.
Can George Lombard Jr.'s 2026 Surge Continue?
The 21-year-old prospect started his 2026 campaign by dominating the Double-A, batting with an average of .312 with four homers and 10 RBIs. His red-hot start forced Aaron Boone and co. to promote him to the Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on April 29
However, the transition was not that smooth, but he has found his rhythm.
Across his 42 games at the Triple-A, Lombard is averaging .231 with a .381 OBP and a modest .766 OPS. During this stretch, he has hit four homers, 15 RBIs, and has eight stolen bases.
His June numbers have been exceptionally good as he is averaging .292 with a stellar .949 OPS in 13 games. That is why the injury is quite significant.
The Yankees were evaluating his performance for a potential call-up to the majors. While the team has not clarified anything about his injuries, it would not be wrong to be hopeful.
