Down 0-3 in the top of the third against the A's in the final game of a three-game road series, the New York Yankees started to load the bases, sent 18 batters to the plate, and recorded 13 runs in a single inning to clinch the victory with an eventual 13-8 score.
And with this, they became a part of the AL History.
The New York Yankees became the first team in the American League to score 13 or more runs in a game, with all of its hits and runs coming in the same inning, per popular Baseball account Talkin' Yanks.
The two teams to have done it in the National League include the Braves (1992) and the Phillies (2003).
Anthony Volpe started the frame with a single. From there, the Yankees started loading the bases with consecutive walks to former Athletic Max Schuemann and catcher Austin Wells.
By the time Paul Goldschmidt struck out looking for the first out, the Yankees had already built a 10-3 lead.
In that period, Volpe contributed with another RBI single. Cody Bellinger has two singles in that inning. Schuemann later crushed a two-run double to deep left field.
But it was Ben Rice who did the most damage during the innings, with 4 RBI. He went 2-for-2 in the frame. First, a game-tying, two-run double down the right-field line off Jacob Lopez.
Then, when he returned to the plate later in the inning, Rice hit a deep two-run triple off the base of the right-field wall off Michael Kelly.
Captain Aaron Judge and veteran Paul Goldsmith each contributed an RBI before striking out in their second appearance in the frame.
Other Records the Yankees Achieved With The 13-Run Onslaught
Sunday's performance was the biggest offensive frame for the Yankees in more than two decades. The last time the team scored 13 runs in a single inning was 21 years ago.
The Yankees' offense exploded for 13 runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to secure a 20-11 comeback win against the Rays back in June 2005. They recorded another 13-run innings in that same year against the same team.
Sunday's rally fell just one run short of the Yankees’ all-time franchise record for runs in a single inning. The record of 14 runs was set on July 6, 1920, against the Washington Senators. During that 14-run frame, Babe Ruth was in the lineup.
And according to CBS Sports Research, the 13 runs in the third innings are the most the Yankees have scored in an inning without a home run since 1945, when they scored the same against the Boston Red Sox.
Furthermore, the Yankees became just the fifth team in the Expansion Era (since 1961) to score at least 13 runs in an inning without leaving the yard. The team record in the modern era (since 1900) for runs scored in an inning without a homer remains 14. It happened during that same 1920 game against Washington.
